A banda Chicago nasceu em 1967, em Chicago, Illinois, inicialmente sob o nome de The Big Thing. Pouco depois, mudou para Chicago Transit Authority, lançando seu primeiro álbum duplo em 1969, que rapidamente chamou atenção pela mistura de rock, jazz, soul e música clássica, com forte presença de metais. Após o sucesso, a banda encurtou o nome para Chicago, consolidando sua identidade.
A formação clássica incluía Robert Lamm (teclados, vocais), Peter Cetera (baixo, vocais), Terry Kath (guitarra, vocais), Danny Seraphine (bateria), James Pankow (trombone), Lee Loughnane (trompete) e Walter Parazaider (saxofone, flauta, clarinete).
